Up Front AM: Washington State Republicans back Mitch…er, Mitt?

First take on the day’s political news from the Up Front team.

Slip of the press release:  A press release from the State Republican Roanoke Conference over the weekend announced the results of a straw poll, and the winner is…Mitch Romney?

“Mitch Romney wins Roanoke Conference Republican presidential Straw Poll…” read the headline, and the release gives more details on “Mitch” getting 60%.  Just a humorous footnote to the weekend conference, as State Republicans have previously shown interest in Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels.  Meanwhile, Newt Gingrich got 22%, and not many Ron Paul supporters attended the Roanoke Conference.

The race to watch:  Up Front looks at the fast-changing First Congressional District.  Republican James Watkins jumped out of the race Friday night, after doing a debate just Thursday and an interview with Up Front.  This appears to clear the field for Republican John Koster, barring another candidate jumping in.

Baumgartner’s fundraising challenge:  The Seattle Times has a profile today on Republican Senate candidate Michael Baumgarter, laying out his fundraising challenges against Democratic candidate Maria Cantwell.
