Republican James Watkins quits 1st District Congressional Race

Republican James Watkins says he will withdraw from the 1st District race for Congress, and support fellow Republican John Koster.

Watkins writes in an e-mail, “It’s a decision I’ve struggled with—and it didn’t come easily.”

The Redmond business consultant had criticized Koster for being a a politician for 20 years, but tonight, he told supporters in an e-mail he’s endorsing Koster.  “I’m optimistic that potential political spectators will curb their personal ambitions and not enter the race.  That would be the height of a destructive, self-serving ego trip.  Regardless, John Koster will be our nominee…we’ll be represented by someone who shares our values.”

Besides Koster, the other remaining Republican in the race is Larry Ishmael.  Republican Greg Anders dropped out earlier this week.

Meanwhile, Democrats have no shortage of candidates including Darcy Burner, Suzan Del Bene, Roger Goodman, Steve Hobbs, Laura Ruderman and Darshan Rauniyar.

The new first district was drawn by the state Redistricting Commission to be a swing district.  It includes the rural portions of Whatcom, Skagit and Snohomish counties, as well as the northeast corner of King County including cities like Clyde Hill, Redmond out to North Bend.
