Up Front AM: Governor proposes oil fee; Dunn supports gay marriage

First take on the day’s political news from the Up Front team.

Gregoire transportation proposal:  In addition to pitching her sales tax increase, Governor Christine Gregoire makes her state-of-the-state speech today, proposing a transportation package and a fee on oil produced in Washington state.

Gay marriage:  Republican Attorney General candidate and King County Councilman Reagan Dunn tells KING 5 he supports gay marriage.  The issue came up for a vote yesterday as the Council debated its state legislative agenda.  Democratic AG candidate and councilman Bob Ferguson also supports gay marriage, but unlike Dunn, believes the legislature should pass it, without a public vote.

Becoming more independent:  Gallup reports the percentage of Americans considering themselves “independents” has grown to a record 40%.  More Americans continue to identify themselves as Democrats (31%) than Republicans (27%).

Waterfront Welfare update:  The KING 5 investigators catch up with a chiropractor being investigated by federal authorities for allegedly conspiring with a woman to collect rent assistance from the Seattle Department of Housing, for a million-dollar lakefront home.
