KING 5 poll: McKenna’s male, independent advantage

Why is Rob McKenna consistently leading Democrat Jay Inslee in our polls?  Think men and independent voters.

In a new KING 5 poll of 549 likely voters across Washington state, conducted on landlines and cell phones, 44% say they’d support McKenna if the election were today, vs. 38% for Inslee.

Among men, SurveyUSA finds McKenna holds a 13-point lead (49% to 36%).  And McKenna continues to have a significant lead among likely voters who identify themselves as independents (45% to 29%).

Inslee pulls even with women (40%/40%), and is slightly ahead in the three-county Metro region of King, Pierce and Snohomish counties (42% Inslee vs. 39% McKenna).

Interestingly, McKenna holds more Republicans (82%) than Inslee holds Democrats (77%).

In the poll, 17% are undecided with still a year to go until the election.  The poll has a margin of +/- 4.3%.
